Project Portfolio Management PPM

There are great software products and platforms out there for detailed project planning such as Microsoft Project. When you are doing project portfolio management, DoView®  software complements the use of these at your planning stage by first helping you work out which projects you should be doing to achieve your priorities

Just as importantly, it then lets you quickly communicate to management and stakeholders exactly why you have selected the projects that you have.

DoView is lite and agile and compared to other software, it is explicitly designed for use during the course of strategy meetings to map your projects onto your priorities and then to visualize that mapping. In traditional text-based strategic plans, people try to do this by writing a text-based rationale for why they have selected their projects. The DoView® approach is much more rigorous and transparent than this.

Below is a simple example of a visual strategic plan.

A DoView® visual strategy model of what you’re wanting to do is drawn with the board or executive team

A  visual model of the organization's high-level outcomes and of the lower-level steps needed to achieve them.

Click on the boxes with small gray triangles to drill-down into this live DoView® visual strategy model below

Boxes within the model are prioritized

Show which outcomes you are focusing on in the next planning period (e.g. the next year). Only 'A' priorities are marked.

Projects/activities boxes are inserted

Projects are linked to the priority boxes they are focused on

The model is reviewed to make sure that there is ‘line-of-sight’ alignment

Ensure that you're focusing your projects on your priorities. The number in the gray box shows the number of projects focused on each box. The 'Clarity about IP' box does not have any projects focused on it, so it is either not a board priority or at least one new project needst to be focused on it. In real-world visual strategic planning there are usually many more project boxes than in this simple example.

A poster is used to show how projects have been mapped onto priorities

The second poster below shows that the mapping has been done. The detailed consideration of whether there is strategic alignment between priorities and projects is done within DoView® software as shown above.
